ALFRED B. DAVIS SR., MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS

The Alfred B. Davis Sr., scholarships were established by Patricia D. Garrett in memory of her father who was an active member of the Mobile Area Mardi Gras Association for more than seventy years. The scholarships will be awarded to three African American full time native-born Mobile County students. Must be enrolled in an accredited college/university in the U.S. and class status of sophomore or junior as of fall semester 2012.  Awards may be use for cost of books, fees, and/or tuition only. 

Essay Deadline: Must be postmarked by 5:00pm January 18, 2013. NO EMAILS ACCEPTED.

Eligible: Applicants must meet the following criteria: Be a native Mobile County (Alabama) resident; graduate of Mobile County private, public or denominational secondary education system. Must be a full time student currently attending a college/university, class status: sophomore (earned min.24/max. 36 credits) and junior (earned max.72 credits) as of September/fall semester 2012. Winners will have to submit documents verifying requested information to the committee.

Essay Criteria: Apply for only one award. Must have the required G.P.A. for your selected essay award. Submit essay with cover page and title information as stated for A/B/C. essay. Include the following information on top left corner of cover sheet: Name/home address/city/state/zip code/telephone #. Same information of attending college/university; class status number of credits earned/G.P.A. as of September 2012.

Essay Topics: Select one aware topic based on G.P.A. ($1000/600/500).

      Award A-$1000/G.P.A 3.3/4.0 or higher, soph.-junior class status.  Essay 700-800 words or less. Do not exceed the max.

TOPIC: Is Michelle Obama’s campaign against childhood obesity (one of her signature issues),”Let’s Move” a Big Government Issue or a major health concern regarding children in America? Discuss your views/pro or con.

Award B- $600/G.P.A 3.3/4.0 or higher, soph.-junior class status. Essay 600-700 words or less. Do not exceed the max.

TOPIC:  Trace the rich history of the Mobile Area Mardi Gras Association (MAMGA). Do you believe that MAMGA contributes to the economic wealth of Mobile and what impact does it have on the city? Discuss your views and think out of the box.

Award C -$500/G.P.A. 3.0/4.0 or higher, soph.-junior class status. Essay 500-600 words or less. Mobile has attracted to the “Azalea City one of the leading European aerospace contractors Airbus France from Lyon, France. Explain why you think Mobile was successful in capturing this prize? What type of jobs will they bring and what skill sets are needed to obtain a job with Airbus? Do you think your current education and career path would be a match for their jobs? Discuss your views.

An impartial committee of educators will be responsible for selecting the winners. The criteria for judging essays: academic merit, content, research data, etc.  Applicants will be notified by mail of the essay competition results on or before 01/29/2013.  The winners will have to submit to the judging committee the necessary documents : verify the college/university attending, class status, number of credits earned as entering sophomore or junior class as of September, 2012 (Must have official seal envelope from the Registrar’s Office), no later than February 5, 2013.  Please mail all essay entries and information to:
